Washington

White House and bike

White House

I found myself awake at 5am and unable to sleep, so I read and waited till it was light enough to put my bike together again. It didn’t take long to do this, maybe an hour or so, the fiddliest bit was attaching the front mudguard to the fork – not fun to do with cold hands!

The forecast for today was sunny and hot, so I cycled into the capital. On the map Burke Lake Park doesn’t look that far away from the center of town, maybe 15miles or so. Taking notes of how busy the roads were yesterday I decided to follow a cycle route over to Alexandria and straight into town. From the river (?) side trail you could see the dome of the White House and the famous pointy monument thingy. Once you are close up you realize that it really isn’t that big, I guess Hollywood exaggerates sometimes!

Looking at the watch I realized that I was running out of time, it took me four hours to get here and I didn’t want too cycle on the roads at night, so I headed back to camp. I didn’t have time to visit the National Shrine in the end, maybe another time. You know what it’s like.
